A process for insulating preformed coils that are to be installed in an electric machine. An automatic winding machine winds strips of insulating material around the conductor bundles of the preformed coils. The process comprises the steps of increasing the width between the sides of the coil legs and/or the angle of spread formed by the legs of the coil to meet the minimum processing dimensions of the automatic machine, applying the insulating material, and reshaping the coil width and angle of spread to dimensions required for installation into the electric machine.
