This invention relates to catamenial tampons, and more particularly to an improved tampon which has a compressed core portion and at least one flexible panel for improved coverage of the interior of the vaginal cavity and for directing fluid toward the tampon core. The tampon of the present invention combines the advantages of an absorbent material compressed to a self- sustaining form with an absorbent portion which is uncompressed and relatively flexible. This tampon has a central absorbent core having a first (insertion) end, a second (withdrawal) end disposed opposite the first end, and a side surface which extends between the first end and the second end. The central absorbent core is constructed from an absorbent material which has been compressed to a self-sustaining form. The tampon also includes at least one flexible panel which is joined to the central absorbent core along at least a portion of the side surface of the core. The flexible panel extends outwardly from the core away from this point of attachment.

L'invention concerne des tampons absorbants et plus particulièrement des tampons améliorés qui présentent une partie centrale comprimée et au moins une panneau souple permettant de mieux recouvrir l'intérieur de la cavité vaginale et de diriger les fluides vers la partie centrale du tampon. Le tampon selon l'invention combine les avantages d'un matériau absorbant comprimé à une forme indépendante et d'une partie absorbante non comprimée et relativement souple. Ce tampon possède une partie centrale absorbante pourvue d'une première extrémité (d'insertion), d'une seconde extrémité (de retrait) disposée à l'opposé de la première extrémité et d'une surface latérale qui s'étend entre la première et la seconde extrémité. La partie centrale absorbante est constituée d'un matériau absorbant compressé à une forme indépendante. Ce tampon comporte également au moins un panneau souple fixé à la partie centrale absorbante le long d'au moins une partie de la surface latérale de la partie centrale. Le panneau souple s'étend à partir de la partie centrale vers l'extérieur en s'éloignant de son point de fixation.
