A method and system wherein data files representing physical objects or digital data are assigned attributes such as title, statement of responsibility, edition, type specific details, publication, physical description and notes, and wherein the assignment, search, editing and retrieval of these attributes and the objects they describe are handled from a single architecture. Objects defined to the system are assigned by the software internal identifiers that encode the site, workstation, type of object and unique identification number. This identification method allows viewing and accessing any arbitrary collection of system-defined objects from anywhere in the system domain as a single virtual collection with a common root.
