A method and apparatus is provided for removing water accumulated at the cathode (22) of an electrochemical fuel cell incorporating a solid polymer ion exchange membrane (12). Liquid water accumulated at the cathode can be removed by maintaining a partial pressure of water vapor in the hydrogen-containing gas supply below the saturation pressure of water vapor therein such that water accumulated at the cathode is drawn by a concentration gradient toward the anode (20) across the membrane and is absorbed as water vapor into the hydrogen-containing gas supply between the inlet and the outlet. In one embodiment, the partial pressure of water vapor in the hydrogen-containing gas supply is maintained below the saturation pressure of water vapor therein by imparting a pressure drop between the inlet and the outlet sufficient to draw water accumulated at the cathode toward the anode. In another embodiment, the partial pressure of water vapor at the inlet of the hydrogen-containing gas supply is maintained at less than the saturation pressure of water vapor therein. Liquid water accumulated at the cathode can also be removed by maintaining a partial pressure of water vapor in the oxygen-containing gas supply below the saturation pressure of watervapor therein such that water accumulated at the cathode is drawn by a concentration gradient and is absorbed as water vapor into the oxygen-containing gas supply between the inlet and the outlet. Liquid water accumulated at the cathode can also be removed by absorbing water vapor into both the hydrogen-containing gas supply and the oxygen-containing gas supply.
Présentation d'une méthode et d'un dispositif permettant d'éliminer l'eau accumulée à la cathode (22) d'une pile à combustible électrochimique comprenant une membrane (12) d'échange d'ions en polymère plein. L'eau sous forme liquide accumulée à la cathode peut être éliminée en maintenant une pression partielle de vapeur d'eau dans l'alimentation en gaz renfermant de l'hydrogène à un niveau inférieur à la pression de saturation de la vapeur d'eau pour que l'eau accumulée à la cathode soit attirée par un gradient de concentration vers l'anode (20) à travers la membrane et absorbée sous forme de vapeur d'eau dans l'alimentation en gaz renfermant de l'hydrogène entre l'entrée et la sortie. Dans une application, la pression partielle de vapeur d'eau dans l'alimentation en gaz renfermant de l'hydrogène est maintenue sous la pression de saturation de la vapeur d'eau en lui faisant subir une baisse de pression entre l'entrée et la sortie qui suffit à attirer l'eau accumulée dans la cathode vers la cathode. Dans une autre application, la pression partielle de la vapeur d'eau à l'entrée de l'alimentation en gaz renfermant de l'hydrogène est maintenue en deça de la pression de saturation de la vapeur d'eau. L'eau sous forme liquide qui s'est accumulée à la cathode peut aussi être éliminée en maintenant une pression partielle de vapeur d'eau dans l'alimentation en gaz renfermant de l'oxygène, qui est inférieure à la pression de saturation de la vapeur d'eau pour que l'eau accumulée à la cathode soit attirée par un gradient de concentration et absorbée sous forme de vapeur d'eau dans l'alimentation en gaz renfermant de l'hydrogène entre l'entrée et la sortie. L'eau, sous forme liquide, accumulée à la cathode peut également être éliminée par absorption de la vapeur d'eau tant dans le gaz d'alimentation renfermant de l'hydrogène que dans le gaz d'alimentation renfermant de l'oxygène.
