A shock-absorbing device using at least one piston (23) moving in a cylinder (24) filled with an elastomeric gum. The device includes means (29) for altering the cross-section of the mass of gum across the head of the piston (23), particularly according to the travel speed of the piston in the cylinder, whereby the shock-absorption curve of the device may be adapted to the forces to be absorbed. Said device may be used in a variety of fields in which very powerful forces need to be absorbed, e.g. in railway engineering, for protecting constructions from earthquakes, etc.

L'invention se rapporte à un dispositif formant amortisseur du type utilisant au moins un piston (23) qui se déplace dans un cylindre (24) rempli d'une gomme élastomère. Le dispositif comprend des moyens (29) permettant de modifier la section de passage de la gomme d'un côté à l'autre de la tête du piston (23) en fonction notamment de la vitesse d'enfoncement du piston dans son cylindre permettant ainsi de modifier la courbe d'amortissement du dispositif en fonction des efforts qu'il doit encaisser. L'invention trouve son application dans de larges domaines d'amortissement d'efforts très importants, par exemple dans le domaine ferroviaire, pour la protection sismique d'ouvrages, etc.
