The dryer of this invention employs a vacuum chamber interposed below and between first and second heated dryer rolls (26,28). The vacuum chamber has two sides and a top which overlies two grooved reversing rolls (110,114). The vacuum chamber controls all flow of air in the gap between and below the dryer rolls. The dryer-fabric-backed paper web passes from the first dryer roll around the reversing rolls and up to the second dryer roll. The dryer fabric seals the vacuum chamber, and air is drawn therefrom. The provision of the grooved rolls permits a greater wrap of the felt around the dryers and the application of vacuum to hold the web against the felt during movement of the web between the dryers and the grooved rolls and between the grooved rolls.

Le sécheur de cette invention emploie une enceinte à dépression placée entre deux rouleaux sécheurs (26, 28) chauffés et au-dessous de ceux-ci. Cette enceinte, comportant deux côtés et une face supérieure qui recouvre deux cylindres de renvoi cannelés (110, 114), régule le flux d'air s'écoulant entre les rouleaux sécheurs et au-dessous d'eux. La bande de papier continue en appui sur la toile de séchage passe du premier rouleau sécheur autour des cylindres de renvoi pour se rendre jusqu'au second rouleau sécheur. La toile de séchage ferme hermétiquement l'enceinte à dépression d'où l'air est prélevé. La présence des deux cylindres dans l'enceinte fait qu'une plus grand partie des faces de rouleau sécheur reste en contact avec la bande tandis que, grâce à l'enceinte, se crée une dépression sur les deux cylindres et les trois tronçons de bande qui ne sont pas sur les cylindres, et ce, en ne faisant appel qu'à une seule source de dépression, ce qui permet de réaliser d'importants gains de coûts.
