A fishing rod comprising an elongate rod having a handle at a base end, a reel adjacent the handle, a line running from the reel along the rod, a line guide at an outer end of the rod is improved by a stand attached to the rod at a position spaced from the handle and including a mounting bracket attached to the rod and a pair of legs attached to the mounting bracket and extending therefrom outwardly and downwardly to outer ends thereof, the outer ends being spaced by a distance of at least ten inches so as to be sufficient to prevent the rod and the legs from being pulled through a hole in ice. The legs are pivotally mounted on the bracket so as to fold to a position along side the rod. There is also provided a flag mounted on the rod for movement from a lowered set position to a raised position in response to a bite from a fish, the flag comprising a flexible mounting arm attached to the rod and a stiff flag portion mounted on the end of the arm. The flag has a notch at an edge facing away from the outer end of the rod for engaging the rod such that the flag is held down adjacent the rod. The flag has a second notch at a side edge facing away from the rod for receiving the line such that a pull on the line acts to pull the flag out of engagement with the first notch to be released to the raised position.
