A curved skid-plate adapted for attachment to the front-outer portion of a canister-shaped motorcycle muffler, thereby providing an inexpensive, replaceable surface that protects the muffler from damage during a crash. The skid-plate is cast or machined from aluminum, carbon fiber composite or similar material. The skid-plate is shaped into the form of a substantially semi-circular extrusion whose semi-circular curve has a shape that generally conforms to the cross-sectional shape of the muffler being protected. In one embodiment, expandable clamping bands are used to secure the skid-plate to the muffler. In another embodiment, bolts are used to secure the skid-plate to the muffler. In another embodiment, the skid-plate's curvature matches the curvature of a particular muffler. In another embodiment, the skid-plate's curvature is somewhat different than that of most mufflers and a deformable gasket material adapts to the crescent-shaped gap between the skid-plate and muffler, thereby enabling a small number of skid-plate configurations to fit a wide variety of mufflers, without damaging their surface finish. In another embodiment, a standard outer puck element bolts to an inner puck-holder element which is adapted for fixation to the muffler, thereby reducing the cost of repairing the damaged skid-plate after a crash.
