A stud locator attachment includes a base member screwed onto a rail assembly of a nailing gun to extend along the axis of the nail cartridge. A stud locator in the form of an extensible member is slidably mounted to the base member with at least two screws passing through an elongate slot formed in a major length of the locator member. Loosening of the screws enables rearward sliding movement of the locator member along the base member until the forwardmost screw travels into abutment with the forward end of the slot. The screws are then retightened to fix the locator to the base member. The lengthwise dimension of the locator member is predetermined to define a predetermined distance between the muzzle of the nailing gun and the rearwardmost edge of the locator in extended position to facilitate the accurate location of adjacent studs to precisely drive the nails into the studs at the prescribed intervals.
