The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for treating pulp. The method and apparatus in accordance with the present invention is especially applicable in realizing the bleaching processes of fiber suspensions and for separating residual gases remaining in the suspension. It is characteristic of the method in accordance with the present invention that pulp is treated at the consistency range of 8 to 20 % in a closed pressurized process in at least following treatment stages: pulp is supplied by a pump to a chemical mixer, chemicals are mixed in said pulp, said pulp flow is passed by means of the pressure of the pump to a process vessel, said pulp is treated with chemicals in the process vessel, gases are removed from said pulp in a pressurized closed separation apparatus in the process vessel or thereafter, when separating gas fibers are prevented from exiting with said gas, and said pulp is passed along a closed passage to the next process stage. It is characteristic of the apparatus in accordance with the present invention that in the inlet channel (54) for the material or communicating with it there are means (140) for converting the pressure difference between the inlet channel and the gas discharge to kinetic energy of material, in other words to a rotational movement of the material.
