A process for making a paper product comprising draining an aqueous suspension of cellulosic fibres through a screen to form the paper product and wherein the suspension prior to draining includes a retention system comprising bentonite, a water soluble high molecular weight non-ionic polymer comprising polyethylene oxide, and a retention cofactor agent configured or able to enhance the effect of the retention system. The cofactor agent may, for example, comprise any suitable (known) water soluble aromatic condensation type resin which may be the condensate of an aldehyde (such as, forexample, formaldehyde) and a aromatic component (such as for example, a phenol compound, a phenol-sulfone compound, a naphthalene compound and the like).
