An approach for providing a quality indicator in support of a communication session between a near end station (101) and a far end station (103) over a data network (105). The quality of the communication session in a direction of the near end station (101) sending to the far end station (103) is determined. A message containing statistics associated with the communication session is transmitted according to a prescribed protocol to the near end station (101) to notify the near end station (101) of the quality of the communication session. The prescribed protocol supports real-time data exchange. The present invention has particular applicability to SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) IP (Internet Protocol) telephony services.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de fournir un indicateur de qualité assistant une session de communication dans un réseau (105) de données, entre une station (101) terminale locale et une station (103) terminale éloignée. Ce procédé consiste à déterminer la qualité d'une session de communication dans le sens de transmission allant de la station (101) terminale locale vers la station (103) terminale éloignée, à transmettre, conformément à un protocole prescrit, un message contenant des statistiques associées à la session de communication à la station (101) terminale locale, afin de notifier la qualité de la session de communication à la station (101) terminale locale. Le protocole prescrit s'applique pour des échanges de données en temps réel. Ce procédé convient en particulier pour le protocole SIP (protocole d'ouverture de session) des services de téléphonie IP (protocole Internet).
