A method for recovery of naphtha from tailings is described. Firstly, preheat the tailings. Secondly, focus at least one nozzle at an impaction target. Thirdly, direct a stream of tailings through the at least one nozzle at the impaction target. Fourthly, inject saturated steam into the stream of tailings to create a mixed stream of steam and tailings. A rapid expansion of the steam causes an acceleration of each of the mixed stream of steam and tailings resulting in a violent impact against the impaction target.
