ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a preferred embodiment, a self-adjusting mechanism for a friction clutch, the friction clutch having a cover, a pressure plate moveable relative to the cover to cause friction surfaces of the clutch to engage, an adjusting ring normally stationary with respect to the pressure plate, but adjustably moveable toward the pressure plate, a release sleeve movable toward and away from the pressure plate, and a release lever having its ends engaging the adjusting ring and the release sleeve with an intermediate point on the release lever engaging the pressure plate, such that movement of the release sleeve toward the pressure plate will cause the release lever to apply pressure to the pressure plate to cause the pressure plate to move to cause the engagement of the friction surfaces and movement of the release sleeve away from the pressure plate will, in opposite manner, cause disengagement of the friction surfaces, the release sleeve having a selected free travel distance between a position fully drawn away from the pressure plate and a position in which the release sleeve and the release lever cause the pressure plate to begin movement to cause the engagement, the free travel distance decrease as the friction surfaces wear, the mechanism including: a sensing mechanism to sense a decrease in the free travel distance as the engagement occurs; and an adjusting mechanism responsive to the sensing mechanism to cause the adjusting ring to advance toward the pressure plate as the disengagement subsequently occurs, to compensate for the decrease in the free travel distance.
