Difluoromethane is produced initially from dichloromethane and hydrogen fluoride, via continuous reaction in a liquid medium comprising an inorganic fraction and an organic fraction, in which is maintained a gravimetric concentration of the said organic fraction in the liquid medium of 25% or less of the sum of the organic and inorganic fractions and a gravimetric concentration of dichloromethane in the liquid medium of 10% or less of the sum of the inorganic and organic fractions.
