A vehicle suspension system for mounting ground-engaging wheels to a vehicle frame (10) where two arms (18) are secured to opposite sides of the frame and a wheel-carrying axle (12) is suspended between the arms. The axle is secured to the arms by a wrapper plate (34) partially surrounding the axle, adapter plates (39) mounted to the interior surface of the wrapper plate and at least one bolt (38) to compress the wrapper about the axle and the adapter plate against the axle. In this configuration, the wrapper plate supports and strengthens the axle. The wrapper plate generally conforms to the profile of that portion of the axle which it surrounds. The axle can be square, oval, hexagon, octagon, rectangular or D-shaped in cross section. The wrapper plate and the adapter plates exert substantially transverse forces on the axle. An aperture (42) is formed in the wrapper plate in the side thereof in a location corresponding to the vertical midpoint of the adjacent side of the axle. A circular washer (44) is welded to the axle on each side thereof in registry with the apertures in the side of the wrapper plate to prevent lateral translation of the wrapper plate with respect to the axle.

L'invention concerne un système de suspension pour véhicule qui permet de monter des roues au contact du sol sur un châssis (10) aux côtés opposés duquel sont fixés deux bras (18), un essieu porteur (12) étant suspendu entre les deux bras. L'essieu est fixé aux bras par une plaque enveloppante (34) qui entoure partiellement l'essieu, des plaques d'adaptation (39) étant montées sur la surface intérieure de la plaque enveloppante et au moins un écrou (38) étant prévu pour comprimer la plaque enveloppante autour de l'essieu et les plaques d'adaptation contre l'essieu. Dans cette configuration, la plaque enveloppante soutient et renforce l'essieu. Elle épouse généralement le profil de la partie de l'essieu qu'elle entoure. L'essieu peut avoir une section transversale carrée, ovale, hexagonale, octogonale, rectangulaire ou bien en forme de D. La plaque enveloppante et les plaques d'adaptation exercent des forces sensiblement transversales sur l'essieu. Sur le côté de la plaque enveloppante se trouve une ouverture (42) en un emplacement qui correspond au point médian vertical du côté adjacent de l'essieu. Une rondelle circulaire (44) est soudée de part et d'autre de l'essieu pour coïncider avec les ouvertures du côté de la plaque enveloppante, l'objectif étant d'éviter le déplacement latéral de cette plaque par rapport à l'essieu.
