A host central processing unit (CPU) of a portable computer executes a software driver, which performs the functions of most of all of the components of a modem. When the portable computer is connected to an analog communication device, analog components mounted on the main circuit board of the portable computer convert data between a form used by the computer and a form that is suitable for transmission and reception by the communication device. On the other hand, when the portable computer is connected to a digitalcommunication device, these analog components are unused and remain powered-down. Alternatively, a portable computer that is to be connected to only digital communication device omits the analog components altogether.
