Apparatus is provided that distracts and maintains the distracted position of adjacent vertebral bodies during a surgical procedure within a vertebral disc space. The distraction device includes a first and second plate, each of which includes at least one extension member for removably attaching to a vertebral body. The distraction device further includes a locking member for locking the first plate with respect to the second plate across a vertebral disc space and a cam mechanism for effecting relative movement of the first and second plates. Each extension member includes at least one bore for receiving a bone screw. The first and second plates are preferably crescent shaped and coupled together by a pin member. The first and second plates are rigidly locked together in a distracted position by a threaded locking screw. A method of distracting a space between vertebral body portions and a method of using a distraction device during implantation of a fusion implant is also disclosed.
La présente invention concerne un appareil permettant d'écarter et de maintenir des corps vertébraux adjacents en position d'écartement lors d'une intervention chirurgicale pratiquée sur un espace intervertébral. Le dispositif d'écartement comprend des première et seconde plaques, comprenant chacune au moins un élément d'extension conçu pour se fixer de manière amovible sur un corps vertébral. Ce dispositif d'extension comprend également un élément de verrouillage permettant de verrouiller la première plaque par rapport à la seconde à travers un espace intervertébral, et un mécanisme à came permettant de soumettre les première et seconde plaques à un déplacement relatif. Chaque élément d'extension comprend au moins un alésage recevant une vis d'os. Les première et seconde plaques sont de préférence en forme de croissant et sont couplées ensemble par une articulation. Ces plaques sont fermement verrouillées ensemble dans une position d'écartement par une vis de verrouillage filetée. Cette invention concerne par ailleurs un procédé d'écartement d'un espace situé entre des parties de corps vertébraux et un procédé d'utilisation d'un dispositif d'écartement lors de l'implantation d'un implant de fusion.
