Auxiliary railway guide wheels are deployable on a truck or other road vehicle to allow the vehicle to travel on rails, using frictional engagement of tires on the rail for propelling the vehicle and shifting weight to the rail wheels for braking. The rail wheels are mounted on a suspension permitting vertical displacement and have a brake assembly coupled to the roadway braking system. The brake assembly provides frictional force for bringing the vehicle to a stop via the railway wheels and prevents damage to the road tires by lifting the tires or reducing the extent to which they bear on the rail during braking.
