A method, apparatus and program product for increasing the performance of a client/server system having a client application resident on a first computer and communicating with a server application resident on a second computer remote from the first computer. The client application and the server application utilize a client/server independent communication protocol for communication between the client and the server and at least one segment of the communication between the client application in the first computer and the server application in the second computer occurs over an external communication link. The method, apparatus and program product intercept communications in the clienbserver independent communication protocol originated by the remote client prior to transmission of the communications on the external communication link and convert the communication originated by the client to a second client/server specific communication protocol. The converted communication is transmitted over the external communication link and received from the communication transmitted over the external communication link. The communication received over the external communication link is converted from the client server specific communication protocol to the client/server independent communication protocol and the communication originated by the remote client is provided to the server in the client/server independent communication protocol. Differencing, caching or protocol reduction techniques increase performance over the external communication link. The applications may by be a web browser and a web server and may communicate over a wireless communication link.
La présente invention concerne un procédé, un appareil et un progiciel permettant d'accroître le rendement d'un système client/serveur mettant en oeuvre une application client résidant dans un premier ordinateur et communiquant avec une application serveur résidant dans un second ordinateur, éloigné du premier ordinateur. Pour les communications entre le client et le serveur, l'application client et l'application serveur utilisent un protocole de communications client/serveur indépendant, un segment au moins des communications entre l'application client résidant dans le premier ordinateur, et l'application serveur résidant dans le second ordinateur utilisant une liaison externe de télécommunications. La communication reçue via la liaison de télécommunications externe est convertie du protocole de communication client/serveur spécifique en protocole de communications client/serveur indépendant, et la communication provenant du client à distance est remise au serveur en respectant le protocole de communications client/serveur indépendant. Des techniques de différenciation, de gestion en antémémoire ou de réduction de protocole, permettent d'augmenter le rendement de la liaison externe de télécommunications. De telles applications, qui peuvent être un explorateur réseau et un serveur réseau, sont ainsi capables de communiquer via des liaisons radio de télécommunications.
