A leak in the membrane of a fuel cell (3) leads to an uncontrolled and heat- generating reaction which can destroy the fuel cell (3). A method for recognition of a leak in a fuel cell (3) is disclosed which leads to an automatic closing down of the fuel cell without a safety device. The anode gas chamber of the fuel cell is treated with a first test gas and the cathode gas chamber of the fuel cell (3) is treated with a second test gas. The cell voltage of the fuel cell measured and the change with time in the cell voltage is monitored. A gas with a hydrogen content of 0.1 to 20 vol. % is used as first test gas and a gas with an oxygen content of 0.1 to 30 vol. % is used as second test gas.
Un défaut d'étanchéité dans une pile à combustible (3) provoque une réaction incontrôlée et exothermique risquant de détruire la pile à combustible (3). L'invention concerne un procédé pour reconnaître un défaut d'étanchéité dans une pile à combustible (3), qui ne fait pas appel à une unité de sécurité servant à couper automatiquement la pile à combustible. A cet effet, l'espace de gaz d'anode de la pile à combustible (3) est alimenté avec un premier gaz de test et l'espace de gaz de cathode de la pile à combustible (3) est alimenté avec un deuxième gaz de test, la tension de la pile à combustible (3) est mesurée et l'évolution dans le temps de la tension est surveillée. Le premier gaz de test est un gaz présentant une teneur en hydrogène comprise entre 0,1 et 20 % en volume, et le deuxième gaz de test un gaz présentant une teneur en oxygène comprise entre 0,1 et 30 % en volume.
