The invention provides an adjustable standard system for a shelving or display unit having a sliding support comprising supporting hardware and means for engaging a track. The track forms a channel accessible through a slot which traps a transverse projection on the sliding support, such that the sliding support can slide freely along the track. The track is provided with a series of ledges which are engaged by rearwardly-projecting engaging means extending from the sliding support, to fix the sliding support at a desired position on the track. By concealing the ledges the standard system of the invention provides comparable versatility and far greater aesthetic appeal than a conventional standard system.
