A street cleaning vehicle comprises a street cleaning apparatus, and an engine having a mechanical power output. A differential and axle assembly has a first drive input drivable in a first phase by the mechanical power output of the engine through a mechanical coupling and a second drive input drivable in a second phase by the mechanical power output of the engine through a hydraulic power system, and drive axles drivable by a selected one of the first drive input and the second drive input, so as to propel the street cleaning vehicle. A selectably operable switching mechanism is included to effect a selected one of the first and second phases. -24-
