A waste gas is contacted with a hydrolysis catalyst for converting COS and CS¿2? into H¿2?S in a unit (1) and optionally, in the presence of an air flow, with an H¿2?S oxidation catalyst to give a hydrolysed gas (17) containing H¿2?S and SO¿2? but no COS or CS¿2?, while controlling the volume concentrations of (H¿2?S) and (SO¿2?) in the gas (17) in such a way that (H¿2?S)-2(SO¿2?) is greater than 0.2 % but does not exceed 0.5 %. Said gas (17) is fed into a Claus unit (3a) in which H¿2?S and SO¿2? react to give sulphur and produce a substantially purified gas (25a) containing H¿2?S as the only sulphur compound. The gas (25a) is injected at 80-100 ·C with excess air into a catalytic unit (4a) in which the H¿2?S is totally oxidised to sulphur. The sulphur compounds in the waste gas are virtually all recovered as sulphur.

Le gaz résiduaire est mis en contact, dans une unité (1) avec un catalyseur d'hydrolyse de COS et CS2 en H2S et, éventuellement, en présence d'un flux d'air avec un catalyseur d'oxydation de l'H2S pour former un gaz hydrolysé (17) renfermant H2S ET SO2 et exempt de COS et CS2, en maintenant les concentrations volumiques (H2S) et (SO2) dans le gaz (17) pour que (H2S)- 2(SO2) soit supérieure à 0,2 % sans excéder 0,5 %. Ledit gaz (17) est introduit dans une unité CLAUS (3a), où H2S et SO2 réagissent pour former du soufre avec production d'un gaz substantiellement épuré (25a) renfermant H2S comme seul composé soufré. Le gaz (25a) est injecté, entre 80 ~C et 100 ~C, avec un excès d'air dans une unité catalytique (4a) où l'H2S est oxydé totalement en soufre. Les composés soufrés du gaz résiduaire sont récupérés quasi complètement sous la forme de soufre.
