A multi-functional cover member is provided for wall joint systems. Architectural structures frequently are constructed to provide a plurality of independent structur- al units to accommodate relative motion resulting from thermal expansion and contraction, for example, or possibly from seismic activity. The space between units is covered by a plate, mounted to allow for movement. An improved and economical form of multi-functional cover plate is an elongated member of uniform cross section throughout, which includes spaced-apart contact means for engaging the adjacent structural units. The cover member is specially configured so that a single design of cover can selectively accommodate a wide variety of mounting arrangements. These include an anchoring base, for receiving screws or the like, a continuous, downwardly opening slot on the bottom of the cover to selectively receive mounting clips previ- ously fastened to one of the structural units, and opposed laterally opening slots on the bottom of the cover for the selective reception of a centering clip mounting device. The cover member also has semi-cylindrically edge margins for the selective reception and retention of a decorative plastic shell. The multi-functional design enables a single part to be utilized in a wide variety of ways, heretofore requiring a plurality of individually manufac- tured parts. Significant savings in inventory and handling costs are realized by both the manufacturer and the in- stalling contractor.
