ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A frequency shift keying uplink of a satellite communications system includes four multiplexed input channels that are connectable to independent signal sources and provide a synchronized data stream output that undergoes Gray Code to Binary Code conversion. The data stream is further converted to a multi-level analog signal that modulates an FM transmitter, an output of which is beamed to a satellite and downlinked to a multi-level FM signal receiver. The receiver comprises a tuner, an FM demodulator that includes a phase-locked loop circuit as the demodulator element, a baseband processing circuit responsive to the demodulated multi-level analog signal for configuring the receiver to operate in selected ones of several operating modes, and a circuit for converting the demodulated signal to a corresponding synchronized binary coded data stream that is further converted to Gray Code and demultiplexed to provide four corresponding output channels.
