A method and an apparatus are described for applying stretch to an article, more particularly an absorbent sanitary article, such as a sanitary napkin, which is to be provided with flaps. These flaps are stretched, and thereby rendered non-planar, by positioning each of them between a mould having at least one aperture or recess therein and a deforming member comprising, for example, a resilient membrane. The membrane is caused to deform under fluid pressure, thus forcing the flap material into the aperture or recess of the mould member, and stretching it non-elastically.
