The invention relates to a protein extracted from the intestines of vertebrates, which absorbs cholesterol. The protein could be identified using highly affine cross-linking compounds. The invention also relates to the use of this protein for carrying out a method for identifying a compound, which inhibits cholesterol transport in the intestines.
