L'invention concerne un procédé de compression d'un arbre hiérarchique décrivant un signal multimédia. Ledit arbre est doté de noeuds et de feuilles que l'on peut associer aux contenus d'au moins deux types distincts. Conformément à la présente invention, ledit procédé permet d'appliquer une compression de contenus pour au moins certaines desdites feuilles au moyen d'au moins deux techniques de codage de compression. Chacune de ces techniques sera sélectivement associée à au moins l'un des types de contenus.
