A 60 kilodalton protein ("oligodendroglial trophic factor", OTF) induces the accumulation of oligodendroglia in cultures of cerebral white matter. Half-maximal oligodendroglial recruitment is obtained with 2 ng/mL of oligodendroglial trophic factor. Oligodendroglial trophic factor is a mitogen for oligodendroglial progenitor cells and oligodendroglia, but does not stimulate proliferation of astroglia, Schwann cells, or endoneurial fibroblasts. Immunohistological studies with a monoclonal oligodendroglial trophic factor antibody indicate that oligodendroglial trophic factor is expressed by neurons in CNS and dorsal root ganglia.
