A dimmable ballast and methods are presented in which the operating frequency of a self-oscillating inverter is controlled according to a sensed lamp current for dimming control or cathode heating, and an AC bus voltage of the inverter is controlled to be at or below a voltage threshold value to prevent over driving operating lamps when one or more lamps are being replaced.

L'invention porte sur un ballaste de gradation et sur des procédés dans lesquels la fréquence de fonctionnement d'un onduleur oscillant autonome est réglée selon un courant de lampe détecté pour une commande de gradation ou un chauffage de cathode, et une tension de bus en courant alternatif de l'onduleur est commandée pour être égale ou inférieure à une valeur seuil de tension afin d'éviter une surcharge excessive des lampes en fonctionnement lorsqu'une ou plusieurs lampes sont en cours de remplacement.
