A laser range finder including a receiver (16) for detecting a return pulse and providing an output signal indicative thereof, a single integrated circuit digital range counter chip (25) connected to receive the output signal from the receiver (16), a power supply unit (17) for powering the receiver (16) and range counter chip (25), and a single-chip microcontroller (13) for selectively sequencing application of power to the receiver (16) and tothe range counter chip (25), for controlling laser firing, and for automaticallyrecalibrating the receiver (16).
