A method and apparatus for maximizing the total amount of blood processed during an apheresis procedure by optimizing the concentration of anticoagulant in a donor/patient and the associated extracorporeal tubing set is provided. A simplified model of an anticoagulant accumulation in a donor/patient's body is used to calculate an optimal anticoagulant infusion rate profile to the donor/patient during a blood processing procedure. A maximum acceptable anticoagulant concentration in the donor/patient acts as an upper limit on the rate at which anticoagulant may be infused to the donor/patient using the optimized infusion rate profile. A minimum acceptable anticoagulant level acts as a lower limit in optimally controlling the anticoagulant concentration in the extracorporeal tubing set. Both the maximum acceptable anticoagulant level in the donor/patient and the minimum acceptable anticoagulant level in the extracorporeal tubing set may be customized for a specific donor/patient thereby allowing the optimized infusion rate profile and the extracorporeal tubing set anticoagulant concentration to be customized for the specific patient.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil qui permettent de maximiser la quantité totale de sang traité pendant une procédure d'aphérèse en optimisant la concentration d'anticoagulant dans un donneur/patient et dans les tubulures extracorporelles associées. On utilise un modèle simplifié d'accumulation d'anticoagulant dans le corps d'un donneur/patient afin de calculer la courbe optimale de vitesse de transfusion d'anticoagulant dans le donneur/patient pendant le traitement du sang. Une concentration admissible maximale d'anticoagulant dans le donneur/patient sert de limite supérieure à la vitesse possible de transfusion d'anticoagulant dans le donneur/patient au moyen de la courbe optimisée de vitesses de transfusion. Un niveau admissible minimal d'anticoagulant sert de limite inférieure afin de réguler de manière optimale la concentration en anticoagulant dans les tubulures extracorporelles. Le niveau admissible maximal d'anticoagulant dans le donneur/patient et le niveau admissible minimal d'anticoagulant dans les tubulures extracorporelles peuvent tous les deux être adaptés à un donneur/patient spécifique, ce qui permet d'adapter la courbe optimisée de vitesses de transfusion et la concentration en anticoagulant dans les tubulures extracorporelles au patient en question.
