A facility is provided in an ATM network to track whether data traffic from a source is being admitted into the network in accord with associated traffic parameters. Such parameters are used to control the admission of traffic and aredynamically changed based on the level of congestion along an associated connection carrying such data. The level of congestion along the connection is determined by launching a particular type of cell over the connection and waiting to see if the destination and intermediate points along the connection return the cell to the sender, thereby indicating that the route of the connection is not congested. If the cell is not returned, then the facility concludes that the route is congested.

Installation d'un réseau MTA permettant de déterminer si le trafic de données provenant d'une source entre dans le réseau selon les paramètres de trafic associés. De tels paramètres servent à commander l'entrée du trafic et sont dynamiquement modifiés compte tenu du niveau d'encombrement sur une connexion correspondante transportant ces données.
