A non-contact method of inspecting a tubular for defects, which method comprises the steps of: (1) taking a measurement representative of a distance between a non-contact measuring means and a surface of part of a tubular; (2) generating an output electrical signal representative of said measurement; and (3) repeating step (1) at different parts of the tubular, variations in the distance measurements being representative of a change in shape of said surface, whereby the location of defects is facilitated.
