There is disclosed a method and system for translating a GUI script recorded in one language environment for playback in another language environment. In an embodiment, all language values in a GUI script recorded in a first language are externalized into an externalized language values list, with a script shell containing unique placeholder entries associated with each externalized language value. Each value from the externalized first language values list is matched to a value in a first language name-value list. A name corresponding to the matched name-value pair in the first language. name-value list is used to match a name in a second language name-value list. The second language value corresponding to the matched name is used to translate the first language value. In an embodiment, a name-value list for each language, containing the name-value pairs, is obtained from a translation resource available for the GUI application environment.
