A coated cutting insert (20) is described having a substrate (40) that has a flank surface (22) and a rake surface (24) and a cutting edge (26) at their intersection, and a wear-resistant coating scheme (44) that adheres to the substrate, and includes one or more coating layers (52) of one or more of alumina, hafnia and zirconia. A wear indicating coating adheres to the wear-resistant coating scheme. The wear indicating coating (56) includes M(OxCyNz) wherein M is selected from the group comprising one or more of the following titanium, hafnium, zirconium, chromium, titanium-aluminum alloy, hafnium-aluminum alloy, zirconium-aluminum alloy, chromium-aluminum alloy, and their alloys, and x>0, y=0, z=0 and y + z > 0. A method of making a cutting insert (20) is also provided and for by applying an as-deposited non-wear indicating coating layer and treating it to convert it to a wear indicating coating layer.
L'invention concerne un insert de coupe revêtu (20) comprenant un substrat (40) pourvu d'une surface de flanc (22), d'une surface d'inclinaison (24) et d'un bord de coupe (26) à leur intersection, et une structure de revêtement résistant à l'usure (44) qui adhère au substrat et comprend au moins une couche (52) au moins d'alumine, d'oxyde d'hafnium ou de zircone. Un revêtement indicateur d'usure adhère sur la structure de revêtement résistant à l'usure.
