The present invention substantially reduces the likelihood and effect of operator error in the alignment and/or relative placement of optical fibers within a splicer or ribbonizer. A plurality of optical fibers is provided, each having a covering of a particular, and preferably unique, color. An apparatus is provided that illuminates each of the coverings with either narrowband or broadband light, detects the light after it either passes through or reflects from the coverings of the optical fibers, and thereby determines the colors of the coverings. The apparatus may then determine whether the optical fibers are placed in a correct predetermined order for ribbonizing, or whether the optical fibers are placed in a correct order relative to another set of optical fibers with which the original set of optical fibers are to be spliced. If the order is incorrect, the operator of the apparatus may be notified of the error.
