A method for producing a brick from clay or shale is disclosed. The method includes the steps of: (a) adding phosphoric acid to a raw material mixture of clay, or shale, or a mixture of clay and shale; and (b) firing the raw material mixture. The phosphoric acid reacts with calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate in the raw material mixture to form a phosphate of magnesium or calcium. The step of adding phosphoric acid to the clay or shale mixture lowers the peak firing temperature of the brick, decreases the porosity of the brick, reduces scumming, and decreases the formation of calcium alumino-- silicates within the body of the brick. A brick produced by the method is also disclosed
