A system having a retinal prosthesis inside a mammalian eye and an external imaging unit outside the eye is provided. The external imaging unit includes an imager which receives an input optical image and a display which provides a processed optical image derived from the input optical image as an input to the eye. The external imaging unit also includes a tracking subsystem, to determine the position of the retinal prosthesis relative to the display. The external imaging unit includes an image processor, which performs spatial processing dependent on the position of the retinal prosthesis relative to the display. Thus the processed image provided to the eye is spatially processed according to the position of the retinal prosthesis. The image processor can perform other kinds of image processing as well (e.g., temporal image processing). An external imaging unit. for use in such a system is also provided.
La présente invention concerne un système constitué d'une prothèse rétinienne située à l'intérieur de l'oeil d'un mammifère et une unité d'imagerie externe située à l'extérieur de cet oeil. L'unité d'imagerie externe comprend un dispositif imageur qui reçoit une image optique d'entrée et un afficheur qui fournit une image optique traitée dérivée de l'image optique d'entrée sous la forme d'une entrée vers l'oeil. L'unité d'imagerie externe comprend aussi un sous système de suivi, permettant de déterminer la position de la prothèse rétinienne par rapport à l'afficheur. L'unité d'imagerie externe comprend un processeur d'image qui effectue un traitement spatial dépendant de la position de la prothèse rétinienne par rapport à l'afficheur. Ainsi l'image traitée fournie à l'oeil est-elle spatialement traitée en fonction de la position de la prothèse rétinienne. Le processeur d'image peut effectuer d'autres genres de traitement d'image (par exemple un traitement d'images temporelles). La présente invention concerne aussi une unité d'imagerie externe destinée à ce système.
