The present invention describes chemotherapeutic compositions, a method for making the same, and methods for inducing apoptosis in tumor cells and/or inhibiting tumors. The compositions are metal coordination complexes of a cytotoxic metal, such as silver(I) and a chiral .alpha.-organic acid, such as tartaric acid, in a pharmaceutical carrier.
