A method is taught herein for providing competitive call communication services at a customer location using a wireline public switched telephone network (PSTN) and a wireless telecommunications network. The method includes the step of installing an alternative line option (ALO) module between a customer two wire telephone connection and the wireline PSTN, the ALO module including a cellular transceiver and replacements for central office functions. Then the method includes the step of performing modem-free wireless data communications to obtain control messages. Then the method includes the step of receiving the control messages at the ALO module, the control messages programming the module with a selection process to use in determining whether to provide the call communication services using the wireline PSTN or the wireless network. Finally, the method includes the step of selectively providing the call communication services in accordance with the selection process.
