An A-to-T single nu-cleotide polymorphism (SNP) identified at position -134 relative to the ATG start codon, in the Pro-Melanin-Concentrating Hormone (PMCH) gene of Bos taurus andBos indicus animals of both British and Continental type, is associated with changes in the average fat and grade fat. The A allele occurred in 67 % of cattle examined and was associated with higher average fat and grade fat levels. The cattle industry may make use of these findings to genetically select for, and/or sort, cattle using this SNP.

L'invention porte sur un polymorphisme A-à-T à nucléotide unique (SNP) identifié à la position -134 relativement au codon de départ ATG du gène de l'hormone de concentration de la pro-mélanine (PMCH) du Bos taurus et du Bos indicus des types British et Continental, associé à des modifications de la graisse moyenne et de la graisse de catégorie. L'allèle A a été trouvée dans 67 % du bétail examiné avec des niveaux plus élevés de graisse moyenne et de graisse de catégorie. L'industrie du bétail peut tirer avantage de ces découvertes pour sélectionner et/ou trier génétiquement le bétail en utilisant ce SNP.
