In an apparatus for stripping material from an object, for example for removing asbestos from a length of pipe, an enclosure means having a closable opening for receiving the object has an outlet means 7, which may lead to a neck portion 8, and through which stripped material can be removed from the enclosure. The outlet means 7 has a periphery smaller than the periphery of that part of the enclosure immediately above it. The enclosure enables materials such as linings or lagging to be stripped from substantial areas, without the enclosure being filled.
