Acetone and phenol are reacted over a strong acid catalyst in the presence of lower alcohol. The lower alcohol can be methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol, n-butanol, sec-butanol, tertiary- butanol and iso-butanol. For each mole of acetone one mole or more of lower alcohol is provided, and two to four moles of lower alcohol are preferred.
