ABSTRACT A tamper evident container (10) assembly for perishable foods such as dairy products. A container is provided with a removable lid (30) which mechanically interlocks with the container (10) in a conventional fashion. A frangible ring (52) is wedged onto the lid (30) to pre- vent release of the mechanical interlock and removal of the lid (30). A frangible tab section (56) of the ring (52) must be broken away to release the ring (52) and permit removal of the lid (30). Absence or breakage of the ring (52) provides visual evidence of possible product tampering.
