A method of forming a substantially planar, multi-layer, composite article that comprises a plastics materials reinforced with fibres that extend substantially continuously in one direction in the plane of each layer is provided. The majority of the layers are aligned in a main direction B and the article (20a) is disposed over a contoured surface of a forming tool (b). The article (20a) is constrained against movement in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the main direction layers and forces applied to the article (20a) in the plane thereof in a direction substantially perpendicular to the main direction of the fibres. The article (20a) is thereby urged into conformity with the contoured surface of the tool (6) whilst substantially maintaining the continuity of the fibres,

L'invention décrit un procédé de formage d'éléments composites, plans dans une large mesure, et multicouches, comprenant une matière plastique, renforcée par des fibres, qui s'étend, de façon quasiment continue dans une direction, dans le plan de chaque couche. La plupart des couches sont alignées suivant une direction principale B et l'élément (20a) est posé sur une surface profilée d'un outil de formage (6). L'élément (20a) subit une contrainte exercée par un mouvement perpendiculaire au plan des couches alignées suivant la direction principale et par les forces appliquées sur l'élément dans le plan dudit élément, suivant une direction quasiment perpendiculaire à la direction principale des fibres. L'élément (20a) est ainsi forcé à se conformer à la surface profilée de l'outil (6) tout en conservant la continuité des fibres de façon conséquente.
