In the case of an electrically drivable light modulator having liquid crystal layers, which are disposed one behind the other and are enclosed between transparent plates having a surface anisotropy that orients the molecules of the liquid crystals and having electrodes for generating an electric field in the liquid crystals, at least. two layers of helical, smectic, ferroelectric liquid crystals are situated one behind the other in the path of rays of a light beam to be modulated. The directions of the fast and slow axes, respectively, of the individual layers are rotated relatively to each other in such a way that the polarization of the light beam is the same upstream and downstream from the modulator. An adaptive, optical device is indicated, which has a field of light modulators configured in a raster-type array. The modulators are situated in the path of rays of the device, each individual light modulator being able to be driven to compensate for unsharpness occurring on a point-by-point basis, of an image to be processed.

Modulateur de lumière à commande électrique doté de couches de cristaux liquides placées les unes derrière les autres qui sont enfermées entre des plaques transparentes présentant une anisotropie de surface qui oriente les molécules des cristaux liquides et pourvues d'électrodes destinées à produire un champ électrique dans les cristaux liquides. Dans ledit modulateur, au moins deux couches de cristaux liquides hélicoïdaux smectiques ferroélectriques sont placées l'une derrière l'autre dans le chemin d'un faisceau de lumière à moduler. Les orientations des axes rapides et lents des différentes couches sont tordues les unes par rapport aux autres de manière telle que la polarisation du faisceau de lumière est identique avant et après le modulateur. La présente invention concerne en outre un dispositif optique adaptatif qui possède un champ de modulateurs de lumière placés en grille. Lesdits modulateurs sont placés dans le chemin de faisceau du dispositif, chaque modulateur séparé pouvant être commandé en vue de la compensation du manque de netteté apparaissant ponctuellement d'une image à traiter.
