A wireless debit card communication system comprises a radio unit, a base station and an end station. The radio unit comprises a card reader for reading information from a card and a transceiver for transmitting a first signal including the red telephone number to a base station and for receiving calls directed to the red telephone number, whereby the first signal enables the wireless communication system to redirect calls for the red telephone number to the radio unit. Also described is a method for directing to the radio unit calls to a number carried on a card and communicated to a base station.
