METAL HYDRIDE ELECTRODE, CELL AND PROCESS ABSTRACT A metal hydride compacted electrode for use in an alkaline cell is disclosed and includes a generally smooth substrate which has been modified by carrying an irregularly surfaced conductive bonding layer thereon, and an adhered layer of electrochemically active hydrogen storage alloy material pressed against the modified substrate. In preparing the electrode preferred methods of modifying the substrate include application of a layer of thin sintered conductive particles, applying a layer of dendritic particles by electroplating, or increasing the surface area by electrochemical etching or by sandblasting. After the preferably binderless active powder material is compressed against the modified substrate, the electrode may be heat treated such as by annealing.
